Spoiler warning: this guide may discuss puzzles and story details. Hints stay hidden until you choose to reveal them.
Curse of Resthaven puts you in Governor Ambrose's boots on a cursed island colony with one hard clock: six days until catastrophe. You are hunting for your missing niece, Amalia, while running Resthaven's docks, interrogations, and wilderness expeditions. Progress is not a straight checklist. It is what you learn, what you bank, and which relationships you deepen before the loop snaps shut.
This guide is a getting-started walkthrough for how to push the six-day time loop forward on a first or second run. It focuses on reconnaissance, revisiting townsfolk, dock trading, expedition cards, goddess blessings, and permanent upgrades that survive a reset. It synthesizes launch-day guidance and system notes from published coverage; it is not a full ending walkthrough.
Content warning
Expect gothic mystery with mild-to-medium body horror. Some of the goriest scenes are rendered in sketch-like black and white, which softens the gore but still leans into creepy, icky imagery rather than jump-scare thrills.
Know the six-day loop
Every run is a six-day countdown. A moon-phase dial in the top-left corner tracks how close you are to the end of the cycle. When day six hits, the island resets Ambrose to the moment of arrival. Townsfolk forget you. Ambrose does not. Memories and some progression carry into the next loop, which is why early failure can still be productive.
Treat the first loop as reconnaissance
Do not treat loop one like a speedrun. You will not see every thread, trade route, or expedition path on a single pass, and a bad decision costs days inside the loop rather than ending the whole campaign. Learn schedules, contradictions, which ships dock when, and which expedition requirements you cannot yet meet. That map of knowledge is what makes loop two feel like progress instead of a restart from zero.
- Watch the moon-phase dial and plan around the day-six cut-off.
- Note leads you cannot finish yet; bank them for the next loop.
- If you played the free Steam demo, its save carries into the full game, so you do not need to replay the opening from scratch.
Spend time slots on purpose
Each day splits into Morning, Afternoon, and Night, with two timeslots per section for six actions a day. Interrogations and some activities cost one or two slots. Expeditions and dock trading also compete for that same budget. Early loops go smoother when you pick a priority for the day - investigation, economy, or a specific expedition - instead of dipping into everything and finishing none of it.
Interrogate, then revisit across days
Resthaven is split into four explorable zones with more than 25 fully voiced residents. Interrogation is not a one-and-done menu. Characters reveal new topics as your standing changes and as you uncover evidence elsewhere, so the same person can matter on day two and again on day five. Keep notes on contradictions between townsfolk; those mismatches are often the fastest path to new evidence.
- Prioritize residents tied to Amalia's disappearance early; their leads unlock topics with everyone else.
- Revisit people after major events; dialogue options update.
- Help residents with problems across loops so they open up more on later runs.
- Conversation choices steer which of the game's main narrative paths you begin to uncover.
Trade smart at the docks
Ships at Port is where Resthaven's prosperity - and your expedition budget - lives. Merchants post the goods they expect, from jewellery to perfume, and matching those requests pays better than dumping whatever you are carrying. Factions such as Ellyria build a haggle bonus the longer you trade with them, so relationship streak matters more than chasing every slightly better one-off offer.
- Check which faction a ship represents before you commit.
- Spend early profits on upgrading town businesses instead of hoarding coin.
- A stronger economy funds expeditions and keeps residents willing to talk.
- Running a small early deficit to build goodwill with a faction you expect to see again can pay off later in the loop.
- Tax rounds and merchant goods also feed the card pool you need for trades and expeditions.
Build the right expedition cards
When interrogation stalls, the path forward is outside the walls. Expeditions are card-based: you assemble resource and companion cards before you leave, and that deck decides how you handle encounters in the wilds. Bring a mix. Resource cards keep a long excursion supplied; companion cards bring townsfolk whose skills matter in specific encounters. Swap the lineup for the part of the map you are pushing into rather than stacking one card type.
- Expedition cards on the wilderness map show requirements; gather what you need before you commit a timeslot.
- Expeditions cost resources and gold, and you hire companions with the right skills.
- You can typically spend timeslots on an expedition once per day, so prep matters.
- Establishing outposts along a route banks skill points for permanent upgrades between loops.
- Treat early expeditions as much about securing outposts and information as about finishing the farthest path.
Goddess blessings: power with a price
Between loops you meet the island's goddess. She is where temporary boons, debuffs, skill spending, and vague quest clues show up. Read the tradeoff before you accept anything. A blessing that carries day three can make day six harder.
Bank permanent upgrades across loops
What separates Curse of Resthaven from a disposable roguelite run is how deliberately it rewards a 'failed' loop. Permanent skill upgrades earned from expeditions and outposts stay with Ambrose across resets. End-of-loop upgrades can also improve your ability to lift the colony's finances and to pursue Amalia. Even a messy town run is a net gain if you banked skill points in the wilds first.
- Information persists in Ambrose's memory even when the town forgets him.
- Unlocked interrogation topics are part of that lasting knowledge edge.
- Spend skill points between loops instead of treating the goddess screen as optional flavor.
- Aim each loop at one concrete upgrade goal plus one investigation breakthrough.
Starter progress checklist
- Loop 1: map zones, meet Amalia-related NPCs, learn dock factions, attempt one affordable expedition.
- Before day six: upgrade at least one business if coin allows, and secure any outpost you can hold.
- Between loops: spend skill points, weigh goddess tradeoffs, note contradictions to resolve next.
- Loop 2+: revisit key NPCs with new evidence, deepen one faction relationship, expand the expedition map.
Quick tips if you feel stuck
- Stuck on dialogue: leave, gather evidence elsewhere, then return on a later day.
- Broke on expeditions: prioritize matching dock requests and town upgrades for a loop.
- Overwhelmed by systems: pick investigation OR economy for a full day, not both.
- Controller or keyboard both work on PC; use whichever keeps menu navigation comfortable.
If you are still deciding whether to buy in, the free Steam demo covers the entire first loop plus the opening day of a second, and progress transfers into the full purchase. Once you are in the full game, remember the core rule: the loop is not punishing you for dying on day six - it is asking what permanent edge you earned before the moon finished its cycle.
