Spoiler warning: this guide may discuss puzzles and story details. Hints stay hidden until you choose to reveal them.

Mouthwashing has one canon ending. Every run closes on the same final scene: optional conversations, collectibles, and joke achievements change what you unlock and how heavy the mood feels, not which finale you get.

That answer matters more after the October 29, 2026 console and Game Pass launch. New players land on achievement names and non-linear chapters and reasonably ask whether there is a secret good route. There is not.

This guide answers how many endings Mouthwashing has, what The Good Ending achievement actually requires, and - behind spoilers - what the finale does with Captain Curly. For puzzle codes and room-by-room progress, use our Mouthwashing walkthrough guide.

Why so many players expect more than one ending

Three habits make Mouthwashing feel like a branching game when it is not.

  • The timeline is non-linear. Chapters jump between the months after the Tulpar crash and the days before it, so later revelations can feel like alternate paths rather than fixed backstory.
  • Steam lists an achievement literally named The Good Ending. The name alone implies a second finale.
  • Optional moments feel like choices: talking, picking up IDs, mixing a mocktail, staring at doodles. They feed achievements and atmosphere. They do not fork the script.

What The Good Ending achievement really is

Steam's achievement text for The Good Ending is the whole joke: get killed by Swansea ten times in the graveyard. That sequence is a late hallucination chase with the ship's mechanic and an axe. Dying on purpose until the counter hits ten unlocks the trophy. It does not rewrite the story ending.

There is no separate Steam achievement for a secret, true, or alternate ending. The finish-line achievement is Go Home for completing the game. When a title ships multiple finales, stores usually label each one. Mouthwashing does not.

Optional scenes feed achievements and atmosphere - not a second finale.

What optional interactions actually change

Optional play still matters - just not for the ending.

  • Achievements: five employee ID cards, Curly's birthday mocktail, spotting Curly by a TV, staring at the Yimpy doodle, and similar cleanup goals.
  • Tone and lore: extra notes, posters, and conversations fill in the Tulpar crew without changing chapter order.
  • Ending: chapters play in the same sequence every run. Community write-ups and achievement lists align on one finale scene.

Content note: the ending and several mid-game beats involve assault, severe injury, and suicide. The section below describes plot outcomes without graphic detail. If those themes hit hard, in the US you can call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.

Wrong Organ has not published a full official ending essay. Anniversary Steam Q&A comments from the team lean on themes of speaking for Curly and walking away from responsibility - useful framing, not a second ending flag.

Quick FAQ

How many endings does Mouthwashing have?

One. Optional play changes achievements and flavor, not the finale.

Is The Good Ending a real alternate ending?

No. It is a joke achievement: die to Swansea ten times in the graveyard sequence.

Does Curly survive?

Unconfirmed. The last shot leaves him in cryostasis; the game does not show a rescue.

Do console or Game Pass versions add endings?

Nothing announced with the October 29, 2026 console launch adds a second finale. Treat the story as the same single ending across PC and console.
