The bigger headline for Thief: The Dark Project Remastered is not only a firm December 3 date. Nightdive Studios, Eidos-Montreal, and Atari are shipping an official new campaign at launch: The Tarnished Mirror, built by the creators of the celebrated Black Parade fan expansion and folded into remaster canon.

According to the Games Press release, The Tarnished Mirror is a self-contained story meant to feel familiar while bridging Thief: The Dark Project and Thief II: The Metal Age. It introduces new factions and environments, leans into Lovecraftian horror, and follows a Precursor hand-mirror job that spirals into imprisonment, uneasy alliances, and a drowned, R'lyeh-like necropolis. Steam lists it as a four-mission campaign set after the Trickster's defeat.

Where and when it launches

Gematsu reports the remaster arrives December 3, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG. Games Press adds Xbox Play Anywhere support, free Switch-to-Switch 2 upgrades, and notes that Switch 2 physical editions remain playable on original Switch hardware.

  • PC: Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG
  • Consoles: PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S (Xbox Play Anywhere), Nintendo Switch 2, and Nintendo Switch
  • Launch day: December 3, 2026 (worldwide date cited by Gematsu and Games Press)

What the remaster package includes

Under the hood, the release remasters the 1998 Looking Glass classic on Nightdive's KEX Engine and includes Thief Gold's extra missions, enemies, and updates. Official materials emphasize light-and-sound stealth, maze-like levels with alertable AI, three difficulty tiers per mission, texture and animation upgrades, a weapon and item wheel, a mission selector, a behind-the-scenes Vault, and built-in custom-campaign support that remains compatible with mods such as The Black Parade.

Editions and pre-orders

Digital Standard is listed at $29.99 and Digital Deluxe at $34.99, with Deluxe extras cited as an art book or remaster diary of artwork, the soundtrack, and a novel preview or excerpt for Thief: The Dark Project. Physical Standard, Steelbook ($39.99), and Deluxe Trapezoid ($69.99) editions for PlayStation 5 and Switch 2 are open for pre-order through Clear River Games and retailers; the Trapezoid set recreates the original 1998 big-box shape with a Remaster Diary.
